Inspired from squash and tennis the paddle is played on ta 20×10 meters (65.6×32.8 ft) court between two teams of two players separated by a net of 0.914 meters (3ft) at the center – the same height as the tennis net.
The players use short racquets called paddles to hit balls that are similar to the tennis balls.
The game was invented towards the end of the 19th century on the transatlantic ships to keep the passengers missing their tennis court entertained.
The sport became quite popular in Latin America, especially in Argentina, and came to France via Spain.
The French Paddle Federation was created in 1992 in Toulouse.
The French Paddle Open takes place these days in Toulouse again (after 13 years of absence) on the central Place of Capitole.
