2015 Michelin Stars For Under €30

Gourmet FoodFebruary is, like every year since 1900 – with the exception of WWI years – the month when Michelin company is launching its yearly guide called also the “red guide”. This year the guide lists 603 starred restaurants in France – one less than last year.

The southwest of France is, as usual, well represented with 42 establishments in Aquitaine region, 22 in Midi-Pyrenees and 26 in Languedoc-Roussillon (just for the statistics purposes!)

Michelin starred restaurants have the reputation for “heavenly” cuisine but also for… making a big dent in ones wallet. This is not necessarily always the case and to prove it we provide a list of 7 Michelin starred establishments in the southwest of France that offer menus for less than €30!

AUBERGE DU CHEVAL BLANC, starting at €25 during weekdays
Location: Bayonne, Pyrenees-Atlantiques
The reasturant located in an old post house dating from the 18th century is in the property of the same family since 1959. The interior is decorated in the traditional Basque red and white colors. The cuisine revisits time-honored regional recipes using local, Bayonne traditional products – salted ham, chocolate, Irouléguy AOC wines etc.

LE KAIKU, from 27 € (New star 2015)
Location: Saint-Jean-de-Luz, Pyrenees-Atlantiques
In the heart of the town, it is a pleasure to relax in this cozy and elegant restaurant, which is located in the oldest house of the city dating from the 16th century. Nothing, however, is old in the menu: the chef Nicolas Borombo signs a fine cuisine, original and refined, centered on the regional products.

LE FANAL from 29 €
Location: Banyuls-sur-Mer, Pyrenees-Orientales
The chef of “LE FANAL” is Pascal Borrell a well known name in the gourmet restaurants environment in Pyrenees-Orientales. He has worked previously for another famous restaurant in Perpignan. His cuisine takes advantage of the restaurant’s proximity with the Mediterranean Sea and uses the freshest products -in the morning, the fish come alive in the kitchen.
Chef Borrell’s recipes are sophisticated, subtle and featuring regional products.

LE SÉNÉCHAL, from 30 € on weekdays
Location: Sauveterre-de-Rouergue, Aveyron
A goldfish bowl on each table, beautiful paintings hanging on the walls: the ambiance matches perfectly the fine and delicate cuisine of chef Michel Truchon. He cleverly plays with ingredients’ textures and flavors, offering beautifully presented dishes, all with carefully selected products …

Location: Sousceyrac, Lot
Dishes that honor the local products, generous plates full of flavor, excellent quality/price ratio …

Location: Toulouse, Haute-Garonne
Stéphane Tournier makes gourmet dishes using preferably organic ingredients. The restaurant is located just steps away from the very center of Toulouse -the Capitol Square – in a beautiful courtyard topped with a glass roof.

Location: Montner, Pyrenees Orientales
In a regional charming house, Pierre-Louis Marin – a Pyrenees Orientales native who returned to his homeland – buys from small local producers and creates modern, creative dishes.
