September 2015 Newsletter

August 30th, 2015

Bonjour chers amis,

Here we are landing again in your Inbox….

"La rantrée, la rantrée", wherever you go these days you hear only "la rantrée" which means of course the start of the new school year on September 1st.
But before "la rentrée" there was/is August - that feels here like the second month, after July, of a general, national summer holiday, with many shops closed, busses and trains on summer timetable, bumper to bumper highways and, I even heard, a shortage of baguettes in Paris due to bakers taking longer holidays!

Moncrabeau Liar Academy
In the south west August started as every year with the "Liars Festival" of Moncrabeau - held always on the first Sunday of the month.
The newly crowned "Liar King" for the year is a Nérac inhabitant, Pierre Gallio, who won the traditional lies competition.
After a 15th of August, the feast of the Assumption of Sainte Mary and a holiday (only this year it was a "boss holiday" meaning it fell on a weekend day!), marked with the usual nighttime street concerts, the events of August went, again this year not an exception, into a crescendo in number and frequency before the - approximate! - curtain fall of "la rentrée".
As usual at the end of August, there were, among other events:
Cassoulet Brotherhood
- the "Cassoulet Festival" of Castelnaudary - cassoulet being the traditional beans and meat dish of south west France - typically opened by the "Cassoulet Brotherhood":
" OYEZ, OYEZ ! We, Grand Officer, declare open the 16th Chapter our Great Brotherhood of Cassoulet Castelnaudary, under the chairmanship of our Grand Master, and in the presence of friends brotherhoods we have the pleasure of welcoming ..."
Agen Grand Pruneau Show
- the "Grand Pruneau Show" of Agen - Lot-et-Garonne department - a three days festival , which has for its pretext the ripening of the prune, the region's most famous fruit.
- and all the events that accompany the starting of the "vendanges", the grape picking season, that is in itself a national event, this year well advanced due to the hot and dry summer!

An interesting happening was also the return of L'Hermione - the replica of the historic 18th century ship - from her American 4 month voyage and her visit of Breast at Bordeaux ports before the winter retreat to the port of Rochefort.
