March 2016 Newsletter

February 29, 2016

Chers amis,

As the winter is steadily approaching its end… Winter, what winter? January and February were in France among the warmest since the dawn of meteorological record keeping, and leaving out the Pyrenean Mountains, not a snow flake has fallen here in the southwest region (not to mention that the magnolias are already in bloom!).

As usual the 1st of February came with "the bang" of the French Michelin Guide 2016 edition - the cookery "bible" - , and with it the joy or disappointment of gaining or losing the famous stars by France's finest restaurants. This year Michelin added a new restaurant designation "Assiette Michelin" that indicates simply a good meal "un bon repas, tout simplement".

In Toulouse we celebrated - like each year - during the second weekend of February the Violet of Toulouse Festival; the city's symbol flower has its own "fête". The violet grown in the northern suburbs of Toulouse since Middle Ages is nowadays the central ingredient of a whole craft-based range of food goodies, liquors, perfumes, soaps, beauty products, etc. all displayed during the two days festival on stands erected on the city's central Capitole Square.
