July 2016 Newsletter

June 28, 2016

Chers amis,

June 2016 started with a bang… that lasted the whole month! To begin with, on June 1st, was the grand opening of the "Cité du Vin" in Bordeaux, a 13 350 square meters, 10 levels and 55 meter high building dedicated to wine as a cultural heritage and as living universe. The museum/entertainment center's structure, covered in glass and aluminum gold plates that reflect in the waters of the Garonne River, was designed by architect Anouk Legendre who says that idea of a well-rounded, seamless, liquid architecture came to her while watching wine lovers constantly turning the wine in their glasses for oxygenation before drinking. The "Cité du Vin" of Bordeaux that offers not only a permanent and different temporary wine related exhibitions but also wine tastings (included in the basic €20 ticket), diverse workshops, events and shows, is the newest and biggest addition to the wine related points of interest of Bordeaux.

June was as usual the month of 3 nationwide events: "Rendez-vous aux jardins" garden festival, "Les journées nationales de l'archéologie" -" National Archaeology Days" - and, on the day of the summer solstice, the "Fête de la musique" - the music feast celebrated even in tiniest villages of France.

A less known tradition in France each end of June is the "Fête de la Saint-Jean d'été" celebrated in many towns of France with bonfires. The most impressive of them is arguably the Canigou fire lit on the top of the "sacred" Canigou Mountain of the French Catalonia. The bonfire, started from a lamp whose flame is religiously kept from one year to the other, is visible from a distance in the surrounding region of Roussillon and its lighting is the signal that all the bonfires of the villages around can be started!
