January 2016 Newsletter

December 24th, 2015

Chers amis,

christmas tree toulouse capitoleAnother year has passed! It is a good time to tell our appreciation for your allowing us to land (almost!) each month in your Inbox - our newsletter subscription list is steadily growing, thank you! - and our hope that you enjoy reading about lesser known facts and events from the southwest of France that with a sincere pleasure we bring you your attention.

This December month is, like every year, the month of Christmas markets organized in many cities and towns of France, of the nationally famous foie gras, ducks and geese winter markets, called here "marché au gras", that take place in the Gers department of the southwest France, of the truffle markets of Dordogne and Lot regions - this year the truffle goes for €1,200 or $1,300 US for one kilo (€545 or $594 per pound) - and the usual general preparation for a joyous year end.
French are not big Christmas card senders - though the habit picked up in recent year - but the seasonal greetings continue for the first encounter of the year or by phone until late in January. Indeed the phone companies record a peak of SMSs on the evening of 31st of January!

In other news:
Recently it came to my attention a competition organized by CIVB (Conseil Interprofessionnel du Vin de Bordeaux or The Wine Council of Bordeaux) called "Experience Life as a Bordeaux Winemaker".
The winners will have the chance to "shadow" a winemaker during a whole weekend and this way learn about the winemaking trade.
To take part you are invited to visit the website , look through the profiles of the six winemakers - that include producers from St-Estephe, Sauternes, St-Emilion, Pomerol, Blaye and Entre-Deux-Mers Bordeaux sub-regions - and decide whom you would like to learn from. The second step is the completion of a short questionnaire outlining your interests, why you should be chosen and what you would like to learn from the winemaker.
Deadline 1st of February 2016.

Nous vous souhaitons un Joyeux Noël, une bonne fête de Hanouka, une bonne année et surtout profitez bien!

A bientôt,
