The aquarium of La Rochelle, located in the heart of the city, is one of Europe's largest private aquariums. Spread on a surface of 8,445 m2 (or more than 90,000ft2) , it is the home of more than 12,000 animals of 600 different species that live in more than 3 million liters of sea water.
Each year the aquarium welcomes more than 800,000 visitors, making it the most visited aquarium in France.

La Rochelle Museums

Oyster City

Exceptional stopover of Pen Duicks at the marina in Rochefort

Mussel Farmers' Fest

Medieval Festival at Crazannes Castle

Listed as a "Historical Monument", the Castle of Crazannes was built in the fourteenth century on the site of an ancient fort. His nickname "Castle of Puss in Boots" comes from its seventeenth century owner, Jules Gouffier, Earl of Caravaz, a remarkable character who inspired Charles Perrault to create Marquis of Carabas, Master of Puss in Boots in his celebrated tale.

"Arsenal Maritime" 350 Year Anniversary

The "Vieux Carré" is the training restaurant of the Hospitality High School of La Rochelle.
It is only open during term time.
Lunch Monday to Friday. The customers are wellcomed between 12:15 to 12:45, service ends at 3pm. You can enjoy a menu or "a quick formula, served in one hour".

Bird Watching on Ré Island

Ré Island on Bike

The best way to visit Ré Island is on a bike. Not only there are kms of dedicated bike paths on the island, but the bridge to the island is free for pedestrians and bikes.
On the island of Ré there are 5 main cycling paths :

  • The country route of 13.9 km from Saint Martin de Ré to La Couarde via Le Bois-Plage.
  • The costal route of 17.5 km from Saint Martin de Ré to Loix via La Couarde
  • The historic route of 22km from Sablanceaux to Sainte Marie via Rivedoux, La Flotte and Saint Martin
  • The marsh route of 18km from La Couarde to Les Portes via Ars and Saint Clément
  • The forest route of 10km
Since a bike is required for cycling all these beautiful paths there are many bike rental centres before the bridge and on the island.
Just BEFORE the bridge is situated Vel'Ile centre.
